RENA DEMEO — HALL OF FAME NOMINATION

Rena Demeo is a pioneering figure in American ice swimming whose contributions extend far beyond her accomplishments as an athlete. As IISA Ice ID #100, Rena holds a unique place in the history of the sport.

On December 14, 2014, Rena completed a 1.05-mile (1.69 km) Ice Mile in Boston Harbor in 5.0°C (41°F) water, swimming 47:03 without a wetsuit. This achievement made her the 100th swimmer officially recognized by the International Ice Swimming Association, marking an important milestone in the development of the sport.

Rena\'s journey into ice swimming began through the year-round open-water swimming community in Nahant, Massachusetts. Following multiple surgeries resulting from a serious ankle injury, she turned increasingly to swimming and discovered the Nahant Knuckleheads, a community of swimmers committed to year-round ocean swimming. What began as a way to remain active developed into a lifelong passion for open-water and winter swimming.

Rena\'s impact on ice swimming has been both athletic and organizational. She has served in leadership with IISA USA, including as Vice Chair, helping develop and promote the sport in the United States. She has also contributed internationally through her involvement with the International Ice Swimming Hall of Fame.

Her commitment to the sport goes well beyond her own swims. Rena has participated in international ice-swimming events, supported fellow swimmers, and contributed her time and experience as a member of the ice-swimming community. She has helped create an environment in which swimmers can challenge themselves, pursue difficult goals, and participate safely in one of the world\'s most demanding forms of open-water swimming.

Rena represents an important generation in the development of ice swimming in the United States. Her Ice Mile achievement, national leadership, international involvement, and years of service have helped establish and strengthen the sport and its community.

Her legacy is measured not only in the miles she has swum, but also in the people she has supported, the events and organizations to which she has contributed, and the growth of ice swimming in the United States. Rena Demeo is an accomplished athlete, leader, mentor, organizer, and ambassador for ice swimming, making her a deserving candidate for Hall of Fame recognition.
